Chicago in L.A.: Judy Chicago's Early Work, 1963–74
April 4 – September 28, 2014

image for the article
Before making her widely known and iconic feminist work of the 1970s, 1980s, and beyond, Judy Chicago explored painting, sculpture, and environmental performance, often using innovative industrial techniques and materials, including auto body painting and pyrotechnics. Chicago in L.A. surveys this less-familiar but significant early work, produced when Chicago lived in Los Angeles and was a participant in the Finish Fetish school, which responded to the rapid industrialization of the West Coast with its own brightly colored, high-gloss form of minimalism...

The Pre-Raphaelite Legacy
British Art and Design

May 20 – October 26, 2014

image for art show
The Pre-Raphaelites galvanized the British art world in the second half of the nineteenth century with a creative vision that resonates to this day. Rejecting contemporary academic practice as vacuous and stifling, they sought to produce work that was vivid, sincere, and uplifting. Their name affirms their initial sources of inspiration: medieval and early Renaissance art from before the era of Raphael...

Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York

Kandinsky Before Abstraction, 1901–1911
June 27, 2014 – Spring 2015

image for art show
The history of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation is intertwined with the work of Vasily Kandinsky (b. 1866, Moscow; d. 1944, Neuilly-sur-Seine, France) more so than any other artist of the twentieth century. Artist, art advisor, and the museum’s first director Hilla Rebay encouraged founder Solomon R. Guggenheim to begin collecting Kandinsky’s work in 1929 and to later meet Kandinsky at the Dessau Bauhaus in July 1930. This introduction initiated an ongoing acquisition period of Kandinsky’s art, with more than 150 works ultimately entering the museum’s collection...

Claire Sherman: Sempervirens
September 4 - October 4, 2014

image for art show
Gestural and heroic, Claire Sherman’s canvases investigate the confusion of scale and space. Purposefully composed in a single day, each composition originates from a specific place and a finite period of time, rendered in sweeping lines and impasto paint. Sherman intentionally retains all of the stumbles, victories, and awkward brushstrokes that lay tangled on the surfaces of each heavily worked canvas...

Ray K. Metzker
ONE AND ONLY: Unique photographs and works on paper

September 4 - October 25, 2014

image for art show
Esteemed as a photographer, Ray Metzker's creative practice was nevertheless unbounded by the conventional borders of the medium. Metzker sought out methods that allowed him access to the full potential of photography as an art form. He continually explored the medium's untapped possibilities; at various times embracing the roll of film as a single picture, using the prints as building blocks for composite works, and even setting aside the camera to explore the expressive potential of the developing process itself...
